My name is Ashley Tan. I am your new representative for the San Mateo Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools, Inc (SMCPPNS). The San Mateo Council is the San Francisco Peninsula branch of the statewide California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools. There are 13 schools in the San Mateo Council. The main purpose of the Council is to promote growth and interest in the parent participation movement by supporting its member schools.

It’s been a while since MNS had a representative to the Council, so the council members were excited to have us rejoining again. Did you know that $5 of your tuition goes to the Council each year? That’s how the Council is able to sponsor the following activities:

Provide collaborated advertisements in local publications such as Bay Area Parent, Parenting on the Peninsula, and Family Navigator.

Host network events for teachers and directors

Host consultant services for all family members

Be the liaison to the greater California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools community

The next event the Council hosts is on November 11th ,which is Network Night, an appreciation dinner where the effort and hard work of our teachers and directors are recognized. In order to cut down on the cost of this event, we are calling all schools to create the table centerpieces. So MNS, let’s put our creative minds together and create something unique and representative of our school!

Lily Wang Harvey, a parent at Millbrae Nursery School describes how the patient, warm and caring teachers at Millbrae Nursery School work with the children to teach them social skills, conflict resolution and how to handle conflicts or difficult emotions.

MNS Teachers are very dedicated and have a knack for guiding children. I am amazed again and again on how Teacher Brigidan, Liselle, Norma, and Megan are all consistently calm, warm, and relaxed whenever I see them. They patiently listen to kids and encourage the sharing of ideas by all, either all morning or all afternoon. They are respectful and insist on the same from everyone as they tirelessly remind the children to “use words” and to use “soft touches.” I know that the kids are learning valuable social skills to get along with each other. I know that the kids are getting consistent guidance on how to handle conflicts or difficult emotions. Kids naturally know how to play and explore, but when it comes to being safe and respectful, that takes a lot of work and reminding by the adults, and in this area and in the area of making learning fun and making experiences new, the teachers and staff are pros! I feel so lucky that my son and I are surrounded by such nurturing, hardworking teachers and staff. They have allowed and encouraged my son to blossom in many ways that has truly surprised me and made me proud (a topic for another day). I too have learned a lot from the teachers. They are inspiring mentors and have my most heartfelt thanks.

We love the Millbrae Nursery School because of their teachers, the playground, and the age-appropriate and gentle way they help children to reach their potential

Leilani has been attending Millbrae Nursery School since July, and all of us love it.

Although our previous preschool was very expensive and prestigious, Leilani had cried often about not wanting to go, now it is the opposite, I have a hard time getting her home.

The playground is awesome. Indoors, additionally to the educational toys there are dolls, plastic dinosaurs and animals as well as trains; There is dressup and pretend play, free play, creative play, and after having had Leilani in a school for a year that did not have any of these makes me really appreciate the difference. Leilani loves the loft area, a special area that gets opened occasionally, they climb up on the ladder, and play with the “special” toys that are up there.

The teachers are all super nice. They know all the names of kids and family, and they work with kids socially and teach them not to only play with their friends and within their cliques, but also play with others. I am so impressed how they work with behaviorally challenged kids and integrate them within a short time, I could not believe the change in behavior I have seen in at least 2 kids within a short time.

Leilani made huge progress, her communication and conversation skills I find impressive, she shows much more empathy and is able to listen longer (unless of course we preach or lecture her…). She writes her name in upper and lower case letters, and now starts reading the regular way. She does beautiful artwork, drawing, painting, that was an area she had regressed so much in within the previous year, and I am so happy that she developed that interest again.

I was a little scared of the co-op experience at first, but it is a real community, and very enjoyable, and educational for the parents. Leilani loves my workday, then I am teacher Sonja, and I often get to do art projects with the kids, that’s a lot of fun for me almost as much as for the kids.

Nelson Van Judah was commissioned in 1967 to design our large outdoor play area. He was asked to make use of the materials we had readily available to us. Those were telephone poles, barrels and pipe. The nursery schools fathers executed the design The result was the unique playground we have today. Where else could a child climb into a telephone pole fort…

The unique playground features climbing structures, swings, slides, as well as a tire hill.

In 1938, a group of mothers and fathers desired a rich and meaningful play and learning experience for their preschool children. Millbrae Nursery School was born. The fledgling school bore no physical resemblance to our school as it is today, but its ideals provided then, as they do now, a safe and attractive place where a child finds equipment for active play and where books and creative media for quiet play are available to his curious and expressive nature. A child learned then, as now, to use his body; to cope with his own feelings and emotions; to get along with others; to satisfy his curiosity; to widen his experience; to accept limitations; to communicate with others; to grow in self-confidence and self-reliance.

The school has reached its 70th year of serving children and families and is going strong with three classes. The school is constantly changing to meet the needs of the children and their parents. Extended care is available for working parents and for other parents in the school who need it on an occasional basis.

Millbrae Nursery School provides you with an opportunity to share a wonderful experience with your child. You can enrich your life as your child enriches theirs; sharing their education during the formative years when parent participation really makes a difference in the development of their character. The families involved in Millbrae Nursery School continue to experience a rich and meaningful play and learning experience for their children, as well as support and learning experiences for themselves. Millbrae Nursery School truly enbodies a place where everyone can grow and learn.
