Pre-K Train Ride Field Trip

We had beautiful weather for our field trip, the kiddos were very excited. We took the train from San Bruno to Burlingame and walked to Washington Park. The playground with monkey bars and big sand-water tables was new and exciting to the children and they really enjoyed their little adventure.

What a fun field trip!

When we wanted to leave the train was almost 15 minutes late and we sat and sang for a while. I also filmed some of the singing, I hope I’ll get around to posting it soon, stay tuned…

MNS Train field trip to Washington Park

Today the children, and grown-ups enjoyed a train ride field trip to Washington Park in Burlingame. Our 2 & 3 year old class boarded Cal-Train at the San Bruno station, and the kiddos had to make the big decision of sitting upstairs or downstairs. After settling into our seats, we all were quickly smiling, talking, laughing and singing; much to the amusement of the morning commuters! We even caught a quick glimpse of Millbrae Nursery school from the train windows as we zoomed by. At Washington Park we enjoyed a delicious snack of homemade pumpkin muffins, fresh fruit, cheese and juice. We ended our fieldtrip by blowing gallons of bubbles into the air, and sleepily riding the train back to school.

Why I love MNS – Let’s begin with the Teachers and the Staff!

MNS Teachers are very dedicated and have a knack for guiding children. I am amazed again and again on how Teacher Brigidan, Liselle, Norma, and Megan are all consistently calm, warm, and relaxed whenever I see them. They patiently listen to kids and encourage the sharing of ideas by all, either all morning or all afternoon. They are respectful and insist on the same from everyone as they tirelessly remind the children to “use words” and to use “soft touches.” I know that the kids are learning valuable social skills to get along with each other. I know that the kids are getting consistent guidance on how to handle conflicts or difficult emotions. Kids naturally know how to play and explore, but when it comes to being safe and respectful, that takes a lot of work and reminding by the adults, and in this area and in the area of making learning fun and making experiences new, the teachers and staff are pros! I feel so lucky that my son and I are surrounded by such nurturing, hardworking teachers and staff. They have allowed and encouraged my son to blossom in many ways that has truly surprised me and made me proud (a topic for another day). I too have learned a lot from the teachers. They are inspiring mentors and have my most heartfelt thanks.

Chinese New Year 2010

There will be 2 presentations, the one for the morning class starts at 11:15, and the one for teacher Liselle’s class at 1pm. As I understand it even children who do not usually attend at this time are invited, but please check with Lily or your teacher before you bring your child. Please note that the table below has times for the morning class and the flyer below the afternoon schedule.

Btw, in case you didn’t know, Chinese New Year (Year of the Tiger) technically starts this Sun, Feb 14th; yes, it coincides with Valentines Day this year… So Happy Chinese Lunar New Year Everyone!

Why We Like Our New School.

Leilani has been attending Millbrae Nursery School since July, and all of us love it.

Although our previous preschool was very expensive and prestigious, Leilani had cried often about not wanting to go, now it is the opposite, I have a hard time getting her home.

The playground is awesome. Indoors, additionally to the educational toys there are dolls, plastic dinosaurs and animals as well as trains; There is dressup and pretend play, free play, creative play, and after having had Leilani in a school for a year that did not have any of these makes me really appreciate the difference. Leilani loves the loft area, a special area that gets opened occasionally, they climb up on the ladder, and play with the “special” toys that are up there.

The teachers are all super nice. They know all the names of kids and family, and they work with kids socially and teach them not to only play with their friends and within their cliques, but also play with others. I am so impressed how they work with behaviorally challenged kids and integrate them within a short time, I could not believe the change in behavior I have seen in at least 2 kids within a short time.

Leilani made huge progress, her communication and conversation skills I find impressive, she shows much more empathy and is able to listen longer (unless of course we preach or lecture her…). She writes her name in upper and lower case letters, and now starts reading the regular way. She does beautiful artwork, drawing, painting, that was an area she had regressed so much in within the previous year, and I am so happy that she developed that interest again.

I was a little scared of the co-op experience at first, but it is a real community, and very enjoyable, and educational for the parents. Leilani loves my workday, then I am teacher Sonja, and I often get to do art projects with the kids, that’s a lot of fun for me almost as much as for the kids.

Kids love our unique play yard designed by well-known architect Nelson Van Judah.

Nelson Van Judah was commissioned in 1967 to design our large outdoor play area. He was asked to make use of the materials we had readily available to us. Those were telephone poles, barrels and pipe. The nursery schools fathers executed the design The result was the unique playground we have today. Where else could a child climb into a telephone pole fort…

The unique playground features climbing structures, swings, slides, as well as a tire hill.

The History of Millbrae Nursery School

In 1938, a group of mothers and fathers desired a rich and meaningful play and learning experience for their preschool children. Millbrae Nursery School was born. The fledgling school bore no physical resemblance to our school as it is today, but its ideals provided then, as they do now, a safe and attractive place where a child finds equipment for active play and where books and creative media for quiet play are available to his curious and expressive nature. A child learned then, as now, to use his body; to cope with his own feelings and emotions; to get along with others; to satisfy his curiosity; to widen his experience; to accept limitations; to communicate with others; to grow in self-confidence and self-reliance.

The school has reached its 70th year of serving children and families and is going strong with three classes. The school is constantly changing to meet the needs of the children and their parents. Extended care is available for working parents and for other parents in the school who need it on an occasional basis.
