Our annual field trips to Farmer John’s in Half Moon Bay are happening (Oct. 27th for Pre-K) and  (Oct. 12 for morning classes)! This is the 3rd year that Millbrae Nursery School has visited Farmer John’s … and that’s quite an honor, because schools must be invited back by the farm.

We love visiting Farmer John’s, which is not a bouncy-castle/train-ride/haunted-house/get-your-tickets kind of pumpkin patch, but rather a working farm that educates our kids (and us) about the growing cycle. There are always several extraordinary gourds to look at, and a stunning variety of pumpkins. Farmer John and his wife, Eda, treat our classes with respect, and we must reciprocate. Please take a moment to look at the Farmer John’s 2011 Guidelines in advance of the field trip.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

• NO CELLPHONES! If you must have a phone with you (work, another child, etc.), please keep it in your pocket on vibrate, and step away from the group to take emergency calls only.
• No jumping, climbing or standing on pumpkins, teepee or hay pyramid.
• Pumpkins have needle-like prickles on the stems, so for everyone’s safety and to prevent the pumpkin stem from snapping off, pick up pumpkins from the bottom.
• Clean up ALL trash!
• When Farmer John, Eda, or any other educator is speaking, please help the kiddos to sit and listen quietly. There are always opportunities to participate, and to ask and answer questions.
  PARENTS: Please don’t treat this as an opportunity to socialize. We all need to demonstrate respect for the speakers as a model for our kids.

The $8-per-child fee includes a hayride, time in the teepee, teaching session, the opportunity to actually pick a pumpkin in the patch (medium-sized pumpkin included with fee), and the chance to see GIANT pumpkins and some other very special varieties. MNS will also provide a snack during our trip.

Please be at school NO LATER than 12:15pm. If you are late coming to school, please meet us at the pumpkin patch. Our classes will arrive at the farm by 1:30pm.

2-3y & 3-4y CLASSES
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12
Please be at school NO LATER than 8:45am. If you are late coming to school, please meet us at the pumpkin patch. Our classes will arrive at the farm by 10:00am.

What a fun field trip!

When we wanted to leave the train was almost 15 minutes late and we sat and sang for a while. I also filmed some of the singing, I hope I’ll get around to posting it soon, stay tuned…

We will be going to the Burlingame station and walk to Washington Park. Snacks will be provided at the park. Kids should wear the MNS T-shirts on the fieldtrip.

Everyone is welcome to attend not just the working parents.

Tickets $8.50 per adult and $4.25 per child (this price includes a round trip) and can be purchased at the station.

Only one child (4&under) will be transported free of charge with each paying adult. If you are accompanying your child, just buy your ticket and one child will go free with your paying fare.

Please buy you T-Shirts ahead of time, and have your child wear it at the day of the field trip. MNS spirit wear, children t-shirt $8; children hooded sweatshirt $17; Adult t-shirt $$10; Adult hooded sweatshirt $27. Please see Carla.

Everyone is encouraged to wear their school shirts to the trip shirts will not be supplied at the park.

The Flower crowns require a lot of steps. Olivia and Alyssa got theirs completely finished, Leilani put 4 more flowers on the one she had started at home, and there are a few in progress.

We used a lot of recycled materials – cut up cereal boxes and magazine paper.

We almost forgot to feed the kids… Liselle reminded us and Bigal and Olivia helped her to get the snack ready. Watermelon, veggies and cheese sandwich – Yum!

Come with your friends and kids for fun and exciting crafts afternoons to make your colorful, flowery outfits and decorations for the posy parade. Sign up for one or for all. We’ll have crafts for all age levels, 2 to adult. Paper and felt flowers, crowns, hats. There also will be tie-dying T-Shirts which is an activity mainly for adults.

Please bring some crafts material to share preferably reused or recycled: colored gift wrap tissue paper, flattened cereal boxes, colorful plastic bags, brown paper bags, toilett paper rolls, old calendars, leftover fabric or outgrown clothes to cut up (green or flowery colors / patterns), green pipe cleaners, plastic or silk flowers.

You can purchase T-Shirts for tie-dying from Maria or bring your own (I tie-dyed Leilani’s stained but otherwise good clothes…)

Be prepared to help with the cleanup afterwards.

I know everyone is looking forward to tie-dying, but for the first one (tomorrow, 5/18) I’d like to focus a lot more on low prep, low clean-up paper crafts, and only have one small area where mainly the adults do the tie-dying – I’d think no more than 3 or 4 at a time.
Remember, permanent dyes will stain anything.

So as if the post was still not long enough… I have prepared a few crafts, most with instructions. Among them:

• For all ages: the paper crown (first picture in this post) handprint lilies, coffee filter flowers
• For 3+ years old glittered cardstock cutout flowers and veggies (from cereal boxes, pretty easy to cut).
• For 4+ Tissue paper rose (blue rose on photo above was made by Leilani)
• For the 5+ year olds tissue paper carnation and felt anthuriums. The felt flowers are very easy, but most kid’s sissors don’t cut the felt.
• Also, I have several straw hats to be decorated with flowers.
• For the adults the tie-dying and felt hats
